My name’s Oksana and I’m from Russia. I’ve been living in Italy since 2014 and I’ve just started to discover the real country. The usual things that come to a tourist’s mind are the Colosseum, Romeo and Juliet, Cosa Nostra, pizza, pasta, La Scala, and so on. I’m not going to tell you about the tastiest pizza and the beauty of the Amalfi Coast since everyone knows about these facts. Instead, I’m going to share my own observations that surprised me a lot and changed my overall impression of the country. Exclusively for Bright Side, I have collected 12 interesting facts about Italy. 12. Italians have a special understanding of distance. You can cross Italy from north to south in just 10 hours. That’s why Italians’ view of distances differs from the views of people from other countries. A 2-hour journey from Milan to the closest Liguria beach (120 miles) is extremely long! A trip from a suburb to a city should also be planned carefully in advance. 11. Italians love an...

A guide to which tie widths are trending and what width is best for you Written by Harold Murrell We know the struggle. Trends change. Style norms shift. As frustrating as it may be, tie width is no exception. For the modern man who wants to stay on-trend, it’s important to move with the ebb and flow of the fashion tide. But don’t worry, we’re here to keep your head above the proverbial waters. So what tie width is currently in style? Here’s the simple answer: Any width between 2.25” and 3.25”. This is the safe zone. Any wider or narrower and you’re at risk of looking like you’re living in the past (or the future?). With that in mind, there are a few considerations to be made when deciding what width is right for you. CONSIDER YOUR BODY TYPE Slim / Skinny Men We recommend — 2.25”- 2.75” Men with small chests and narrow torsos should wear narrower-width ties. Why? A wide tie on a skinny guy will look a lot wider than it would on a man of significant girt...

BY EMILY REKSTIS It's getting to that time of year — jackets are shedding, pant lengths are shortening, and beauty writers hammer you with sunscreen articles. You probably feel like you've seen them all and know everything you need to know. However, some of what you believe may not actually be the truth. That is why we wanted to set the record straight, once and for all. I spoke with three top dermatologists to get the average misconceptions people have about sunscreens. See what they said to make sure you're not one of the false believers. All sunscreens are created equal There's, of course, a difference in sunscreens based on SPF (or Sun Protection Factor) levels, which we'll get into later. However, there's also a difference when it comes to the ingredients in sunscreens and how they relate to ultraviolet (UV) rays. There are two categories of sunscreens: chemical and physical. "Chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin where t...

The vegetable lowered the blood pressure of those already taking medication. Eating potatoes reduces blood pressure without causing weight gain, a study has found. Two servings of spuds per day, with skins, are almost as effective at lowering blood pressure as eating oatmeal. Most of the people in the study were already taking blood pressure medication, but the potatoes had an additional effect. However, the potatoes need to be cooked without oil, and preferably in a microwave oven, to preserve their nutrients. Unfortunately, for those who like French fries, the frying process appears to destroy the healthy substances in the potatoes. The potatoes used in the study were purple skinned, because they contain beneficial phytochemicals. Red and white skinned potatoes probably contain these as well. Dr Joe Vinson, the study’s first author, said: “The potato, more than perhaps any other vegetable, has an undeserved bad reputation that has led many heal...
