Five weird things you might do in your sleep

Image
By Maria Cohut    Fact checked by Tim Newman    Have you ever woken up in the morning to the sight of a disgruntled partner, upset that you gave them a long speech in your sleep? This is one example of the many strange things we can do while we're supposed to be oblivious to the world. Read on for our top five picks. What do you do while you are asleep? Although it is not clear exactly how many people experience parasomnias, or sleep disorders, it is likely that you — or someone you know — have faced at least one such event at some point. Parasomnias are often associated with unsettling actions or behaviors, made all the more strange for being acted out in a person's sleep, while they are completely unconscious. However, although some of the strange things that we do in our sleep may be connected with the presence of a sleep disorder, others are, in fact, normal physiological occurrences that are extremely common. In this Spotlight, we look at five of the stranges

Psychopathy: What drives pathological selfishness?

Image
By Ana Sandoiu    Fact checked by Jasmin Collier    Psychopaths are known for their selfishness, callousness, and violence. These antisocial personality traits are often baffling to the rest of us, but could brain differences help to explain them? And, more importantly, do such hardwired differences help or hinder treatment? Some psychopaths are killers, but some make for great businessmen, researchers say. Psychopathy is generally considered to be a personality disorder. Although the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) does not formally acknowledge psychopathy as a standalone condition, it incorporates it under the wider "antisocial personality disorder." But what is a psychopath? In 1993, Canadian psychologist Robert Hare, the creator of the famous Hare Psychopathy Checklist, defined psychopaths as " social predators who charm, manipulate, and ruthlessly plow their way through life." " Completely lacking in conscience

These Are The Most Attractive Professions

Image
Two dating apps suggest the most attractive professions. Pilots, entrepreneurs, firefighters and doctors are the most attractive professions for men, dating app behaviour suggests. For women, it is physical therapists, interior designers, entrepreneurs (again!) and PR people that top the list. (If your profession isn’t here, check out the full list at the bottom of the article.) At least these are the most ‘right-swiped’ professions on Tinder, according to the company. Dating sites sometimes release these morsels of information and we have no idea how scientific they are. Alternative claims for the most attractive jobs come from Badoo, another dating company. They surveyed 5,000 heterosexual men and women aged 18 to 30 in the UK. Their list looks a little different — perhaps reflecting the cultural divide between the US and the UK. For women, the most attractive jobs were:     Hairdresser     Nurse     Lawyer     Entrepreneur     Teacher For men, the most attractive job

The Personality Trait Linked To Lower IQ

Image
The trait is associated with lower full-scale intelligence and lower verbal IQ. Neurotic people score lower on intelligence tests, research finds. However, the link could be down to the neurotic being nervous while taking tests, some psychologists think. The links have been found between higher neuroticism and lower full-scale intelligence and lower verbal IQ. Neuroticism is a personality trait that is strongly linked to anxiety, sadness, irritability and self-consciousness. The study’s authors explain the personality trait of neuroticism:     “Neuroticism reflects a tendency to experience negative emotions, like anxiety and depression. The six sub-facets of Neuroticism, according to Costa and McCrae (1992) are Anxiety, Anger-hostility, Depression, Self-consciousness, Impulsiveness and Vulnerability. High scorers tend to be sensitive, emotional, worrying, moody, frequently depressed, often sleep badly and may suffer from various psychosomatic disorders. Low scorers tend to be secur

Rejection By This Parent Does Most Damage To Personality

Image
Both parents affect your personality, but rejection by one parent could be more critical for long-term development. Being rejected by your father can do greater, long-lasting emotional damage than being rejected by your mother, research finds. While rejection by either parent is traumatising for children, fathers often have higher prestige and/or power. Therefore, children can take their father’s rejection harder. Professor Ronald Rohner, co-author of the study, said:     “In our half-century of international research, we’ve not found any other class of experience that has as strong and consistent effect on personality and personality development as does the experience of rejection, especially by parents in childhood. Children and adults everywhere — regardless of differences in race, culture, and gender — tend to respond in exactly the same way when they perceived themselves to be rejected by their caregivers and other attachment figures.” Rejection by either parent, or both, has

6 Signs That You Are Charismatic

Image
It takes as little as five minutes to feel someone’s charisma bursting through. People who are charismatic have a magic combination of being courteous and approachable as well as being able to influence others. That is why we associate charisma with leadership and with making people feel comfortable. New research finds there are six signs of a charismatic person:     Makes people feel comfortable.     Smiles at people often.     Can get along with anyone.     Has a presence in a room.     Has the ability to influence people.     Knows how to lead a group. The first three are related to putting other people at their ease and the other three are related to leadership and presence. Charisma seems to have little to do with intelligence, the researchers also found. Highly intelligent people can be highly uncharismatic and relatively unintelligent people can have magnetic personalities. Generally, though, charismatic people were quite agreeable — they are usually empathetic

The Surprising Quality Of High IQ Brains

Image
More intelligent people’s brains are not just bigger… People with bigger heads are, on average, more intelligent, new research confirms. Bigger heads contain bigger brains, which have more neurons (brain cells), which make people smarter. But wait, that is not the end of the story. The latest neuroscience research suggests there’s a twist. When you ‘listen’ electrically to the brain running, the more intelligent ones make less ‘noise’. It’s like a larger, more powerful engine somehow running quieter. It turns out that on top of having larger brains, more intelligent people have fewer connections between neurons in the cerebral cortex, research finds. The reason is that the brains of intelligent people are more efficient — this is known to psychologists as the ‘ neural efficiency hypothesis of intelligence ’. The conclusion comes from a neuroimaging study that looked at the brain’s microstructure. Analysis of the brains of 259 people measured the number of dendrites in their bra

Hauntingly beautiful baby names you haven't heard before

Image
Lisa Flowers When it comes to baby names, poetic darkness isn't, admittedly, a quality most parents are looking for. Nevertheless, the world abounds with deliciously enigmatic and ghostly names, whether they hail from classical Gothic literature or from the kind of classical mythology that's always fraught with memorable drama. The word "haunting, " of course, can mean anything from unforgettably beautiful to mythically or paranormally symbolic. One might think of Edgar Allan Poe's indefatigable heroine Ligeia, or perhaps of the dearly departed Lenore of The Raven fame. Others might think of Mina Harker of Dracula, or of novelist Sheridan Le Fanu's iconic vampire Carmilla, who also went by the anagrams Mircalla and Millarca, to disguise her identities throughout the centuries. Some might think of Bewitched darling Tabitha. Or even of the fairly popular name Colby, which means " coal town, " or " dark town" — an aspect that gives

What are the best foods for heart health?

Image
By David Railton    Fact checked by Tim Newman    Heart disease is still the number one killer in the United States. In this Spotlight, we outline 16 foods that, when consumed as part of a well-rounded diet, might help to keep your heart healthy. Heart-shaped fruits How can you improve your heart health with food? There are many things you can do to help keep your heart healthy and disease-free. You can schedule an annual checkup, exercise daily, quit smoking, or take steps to reduce the level of stress in your life. All of these things can have a positive effect on heart health. But, one of the simplest lifestyle changes that will benefit your heart is watching what you eat. Nearly 6 million people are currently living with heart failure, and around half of these will die within 5 years of being diagnosed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warn that eating foods high in fat, cholesterol, or sodium can be very bad for the heart. So, when taking steps to min
