In the spirit of the on-going general elections, I want everyone to check these weird facts about election out. You will love them, I promise.

  1. The 2019 Presidential election is the sixth presidential election in Nigeria since 1999 when Nigeria returned to democratic governance.
  2. Unlike in 2015 when the total number of registered voters was 67,422,005. The number of registered voters has risen to 84,004,084(Eighty- Four Million, Four Thousand and Eighty Four) in 2019.
  3. Out of the 84,004,084 registered voters, 11,228,582 of them will not be able to vote due to failure to collect their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC).
  4. The North-West has the highest number of registered voters with 20,158,100 registered voters while the South-west zone, which comprises Ekiti, Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Osun and Oyo states comes second with 16,292,212 registered voters.
  5. Lagos has 6,048,156 registered voters, whereas Kano comes second with 5,149,070 voters.
  6. According to a poll by Al-Jazeera, corruption is the most important key concern that will decide this election, followed by economy and insecurity.
  7. In Canada, there is no deadline to register to vote. Voters are allowed to register when they arrive at the polls on Election Day.
  8. In France, citizens are registered to vote when they turn 18 years old.
  9. In Sweden, eligible voters are registered when they turn in their tax registration rolls.
  10. Some countries such as India, Greece, Ukraine and Colombia have a “None of the above” option on their ballot papers.
  11. Over 22 countries around the world require their citizens to vote. Citizens who do not vote are typically subject to penalties such as fines or community service. Voter turnout in these countries is typically high.
  12. Many countries, such as Greece, Australia and Brazil hold their elections on the weekends to encourage higher voter turnout.
  13. Traditionally, elections in the United States have been held on Tuesdays because in the past, that allowed farmers to travel to polling places. Tuesdays did not interfere with the Biblical Sabbath or market day.
  14. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station have had the ability to vote since 1997, when Texas lawmakers passed a measure that allowed secure ballots to be sent to space by Mission Control in Houston, Texas. Once Astronauts make their selections, their ballots – PDFs of the paper ballots they had received in the mail – are beamed back down to Earth, where clerks open the encoded documents and submit a hard copy of the astronaut’s ballot to be counted.
  15. Since 1988, Brazilian citizens have had the right to vote at age 16, Voting is required for almost everyone between the ages of 18 and 69 and anyone who does not vote is subject to a fine.
  16. India is home to more than 800 million eligible voters, which makes it the world’s largest democracy. In order to accommodate an electorate of that size, the government holds elections over the course of weeks, or even months. The last major general election in 2014, in which Indians voted for the 543 members of parliament took place on nine separate days over five weeks.
