HISTORY ON THURSDAYS WITH COLLYBRIGHT

_“We had returned to our village for the Christmas break.  I was turning 16.  My mum was a soldier who paid great attention to our academics and wanted us to finish early.  I didn’t want to go out,  but my two female friends told me to catch some fun.  They had boyfriends,  so I was the only person left alone in the group.  Their friend who drove us was alone too.  He liked me.  While they were drinking,  I requested for malt but they encouraged me to take an alcoholic drink like them.  I have never taken alcohol in my life.  I gave in to their pressure.  With a little sip,  I was drunk.  He drove my friends’ home and promised them he would take me home to my father’s house.  But he took me to his house and had sex with me.  He took my virginity.  He later apologised and said I should keep it a secret.  I did.  Not until I returned to school and started falling sick at intervals.  I didn’t know what was happening,  so my mother was called.  A test was conducted when she came and they discovered I was 3 months pregnant at the time.  My mother was disappointed.  I was expelled from school.  The guy accepted responsibility.  My mother locked and later released him from prison.  10 years ago,  we officially got married in church and this year,  we celebrated our 20 years of being together.  We have other children in addition to that first child.  I didn’t get to pursue my dream of being a nurse because my mother never really got to forgive me.  But I have a peaceful home and marriage.  I don’t know what would’ve happened if my life didn’t take that drastic turn when I got pregnant as a teenager.”
