What New Movies “Harry Potter” Actors Are Starring In. Looks Like Ron Has Found His Style
The last Harry Potter movie was released back in 2011. After that, some of the stars of the magic franchise kind of paused their career. For example, we almost haven’t’ seen new movies with James and Oliver Phelps (the Weasley twins), Bonnie Wright (Ginny), and Stanislav Ianevski (Viktor Krum). Other “wizards” try themselves in unusual roles and show us the versatility of their talent.
We at Bright Side were really interested in seeing their new roles and we were really surprised by some of the actors! Especially, Neville whose photos are at the end of the article.
1. Harry Melling (Dudley Dursley) — The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, 2018
The Coen brothers’ western The Ballad of Buster Scruggs consists of 6 unconnected novels. Harry Melling became one of the characters of the story Meal Ticket. Dudley from Harry Potter turned into a cripple named Harrison who used to be an artist, so he knows a lot of plays by heart. Liam Neeson, his impresario, decides to use his talent and his memorable appearance and starts traveling around the country doing shows. But one day, the public gets tired of Harrison’s performance.
2. Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) — Miracle Workers, 2019
The comedy show Miracle Workers talks about the business in heaven. God (Steve Buscemi) is busy with his crazy ideas and the angels don’t have enough time to make sure everything is alright on Earth. Daniel Radcliffe got the role of a low-ranking angel, Craig Bog. His job is to listen to people’s prayers and make them come true, but he is scared of dealing with people’s more serious wishes. Everything changes when God decides to destroy humanity. In order to stop it, Craig and his assistant (Geraldine Viswanathan) need to work with one of the most difficult prayers.
3. Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) — Little Women, 2019
Little Women is a drama by Greta Gerwig that will be released on December 25, 2019. The Louisa May Alcott novel adaptation will feature Meryl Streep, Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Louis Garrel, Emma Watson, and others. The movie will tell a story about the times during the Civil War and 4 sisters who grew up during this difficult time period. Hermione, from Harry Potter, plays one of the sisters named Meg March. This girl has a romantic temper, she is modest, and she has impeccable manners.
4. Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) — The A.B.C. Murders, 2018
The A.B.C. Murders is a screen adaptation of one of the most important novels by Agatha Christie. This is a movie about a serial killer who gets rid of completely unconnected victims in alphabetical order. Rupert Grint got the role of inspector Crome. He helps detective Hercule Poirot (John Malkovich) to investigate a case.
5. Maggie Smith (Minerva McGonagall) — Downton Abbey, 2019
Downton Abbey is a British show about England at the beginning of the 20th century which lets the viewers see the times when people just started to use electricity, women started to fight for their rights, and the world was on the verge of war. The start of the story is when the hereditary Earl of Grantham dies on the Titanic. After that, the fight for the title starts. Maggie Smith plays the role of the widow of the Earl, Violet Crawley.
6. Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) — Darkest Hour, 2017
Gary Oldman received the Oscar for the role of Winston Churchill in the film Dark Times. The actor managed to portray the character of the 61st Prime Minister of Great Britain perfectly and he wonderfully expressed his feelings during the first weeks of his work. It was the middle of the Second World War and Churchill had to make a lot of bold decisions.
7. David Thewlis (Remus Lupin) — Fargo, 2017
The black tragicomedy Fargo discovered a new side of the acting talent of David Thewlis. In the show, he turns into the colorful criminal V.M. Varga, who does a hostile takeover of companies. Varga loves to have long conversations and he doesn’t think much when he needs to get rid of people. But a certain series of situations won’t let him achieve success.
8. Fiona Shaw (Petunia Dursley) — Killing Eve, 2018
Fiona Shaw received a BAFTA award as the Best Supporting Actress for her role in Killing Eve. This show tells the story of counterintelligence worker Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) who is trying to find the assassin, Villanelle (Jodie Comer). Petunia Dursley from Harry Potter plays the Head of the Russia Desk at MI6, Carolyn Martens.
9. Domhnall Gleeson (Bill Weasley) — The Little Stranger, 2018
Domhnall Gleeson got the main role in the drama The Little Stranger. He plays doctor Faraday who comes to a remote estate. There is some strange stuff happening at the estate: the inhabitants of the house are haunted by something. Faraday needs to find out what it is.
10. Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange) — Ocean’s Eight, 2018
Ocean’s Eight is a light, funny comedy that you can easily watch in the evening. The film tells the story of Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) who is planning a robbery and asks her friends to help her with the crime. The character Helena Bonham Carter plays is of one of the friends. She plays fashion designer Rose Weil. In the movies, you will also see actresses like Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, and Awkwafina.
11. Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) — Origin, 2018
Origin is a YouTube Premium sci-fi show. You will go aboard a spaceship that is going to planet Thea. A group of strangers (one of them is Tom Felton’s character, Logan Maine) wakes up on the ship and doesn’t understand how or why they left Earth, where they are going, and what connects them.
12. Shirley Henderson (Moaning Myrtle) — Stan and Ollie, 2018
Shirley Henderson who, by the way, played the role of the ghost school student Moaning Myrtle at the age of 37, appeared in the film Stan and Ollie in 2018. This is a biopic about the legendary duo of comedians — the British Stan Laurel (Steve Coogan), and the American Oliver Hardy (John C. Reilly). Shirley Henderson was Oliver’s wife in the film — Lucy Hardy.
13. Kenneth Branagh (Professor Lockhart) — Murder on the Orient Express, 2017
The recent movie adaptation of Agatha Christie’s popular novel had Kenneth Branagh in the main role — the Belgian investigator Hercule Poirot. He is trying to solve a mysterious murder that happened on the train. By the way, the actor did such a great job in this role that 20th Century Fox is already working on the sequel with Branagh in the main role. It will be based on another book from the same writer titled Death on the Nile.
14. Freddie Stroma (Cormac McLaggen) — Time After Time, 2017
Even though we can’t really say that Freddie Stroma’s role of Cormac McLaggen in Harry Potter was a key role, it definitely gave his career a start. In 2017, the actor (who actually also works as a model) played in the show Time After Time. In this show, he plays writer Herbert George Wells who invented a time-travel machine and decided to use it.
15. Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy) — A Cure for Wellness, 2017
Jason Isaacs plays doctor Heinrich Vollmer in the psychological thriller about a medical facility in the Swiss Alps. He is the head of a strange facility that promises its patients to completely cure their body and mind, but instead does something completely different. The film A Cure for Wellness is really intense.
16. Emma Thompson (Sybill Trelawney) — Men in Black International, 2019
In Men in Black International, Emma Thompson became the head of the American Division of Men in Black. She is Agent O. In the spin-off of the popular franchise, you will see a story of a girl named Molly who saw aliens when she was a child and when she became adult, she joined Men in Black. Now, she is Agent M and she is going to investigate the unusual alien activity.
17. Warwick Davis (Professor Flitwick) — Solo: A Star Wars Story, 2018
Warwick Davis plays the rebel Weazel in Solo: A Star Wars Story. During the last decades of the Galactic Republic, he was a thief, but in the Galactic Empire, he became a true freedom fighter.
18. Gemma Jones (Madam Poppy Pomfrey) — God’s Own Country, 2017
God’s Own Country is a drama about a farmer whose life was completely changed when she met a Romanian immigrant. Gemma Jones plays Deidre Saxby, the grandmother of the main character. This movie received very good reviews from critics, who compared it to Brokeback Mountain.
19. Ian Hart (Professor Quirrell) — The Terror, 2018
The TV series The Terror shows the events of 1845 when 2 ships went to search for the Northwest Passage through the Arctic. Real memories of explorer John Franklin are the basis of this story. Ian Hart plays Thomas Blanky, the pilot of the ship.
20. Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory) — The Lighthouse, 2019
The Lighthouse was one of the most discussed horror films of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. This black and white movie has Robert Pattinson and Willem Defoe in it. Both characters — the lighthouse keeper and his young assistant are slowly losing their minds.
21. Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) — Girlfriends, 2018
Girlfriends is a British drama series where Matthew Lewis plays the role of Tom, the son of one of the main characters Gale Stanley. Interestingly, Zoë Wanamaker played the role of Madam Rolanda Hooch in the Harry Potter movies. The Girlfriends show centers around middle-aged women that have been friends since childhood. When one of them needs the support of the others, we find out that all of them have difficult lives.
