REALITY SHOWS THAT WE WISH THEY BRING BACK
Thank God it's
Thursday, but guys have you ever thought of great reality tv shows that we
always look forward to when it's weekend? And some are not even weekends, but
they'll always make you rush home from work to hit your TV from 7pm to
11pm...lol...But now? They've gone into extinction due to lack of adequate
sponsorship.
However, there were
few shows that actually worked and lasted a couple of seasons before
disappearing off our tv screens with no explanation whatsoever. Shows like:
GUILDER
ULTIMATE SEARCH
Who doesn't remember
this great reality tv show. Who wouldn't remember BobManuel?
Gulder Ultimate
Search was a Survivor-style show where ten contestants were taken to a remote
location and left to survive with whatever resources they were given. They
would partake in daily tasks (both physical and mental) in attempts to find the
ultimate treasure a.k.a whatever the season’s fictional back story decided a
contestant would have to find to be declared the winner. The show ran for 11
seasons. I could remember some contestants like Vaugh, Kimberly... Lol
It was pretty
entertaining, even though parts of it were obviously scripted. It also had
great production value. There was this one season where an old shaman was part
of the season’s fictional back story. So, on some nights, there would be an
actor dressed as the shaman watching the sleeping contestants from a distance.
Arguably, the best part of the show was the host, Nollywood baby boy, Chidi
Mokeme, who was so good at his job that when they switched him out for Bob
Manuel Udokwu a few seasons in, viewership dropped. The last season I guess was
aired in 2014.
CELEBRITY
TAKES 2
I so loved this
reality show then. Celebrity Takes 2 was basically a Nigerian version of
Dancing With The Stars. Nigerian celebrities were paired with professional
dancers from the Spirit of David dance troupe. In its two seasons, it had an
impressive cast of celebrities like Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Sound Sultan, Kunle
Afolayan, Omowunmi Akinnifesi, Funmi Iyanda was the presenter then (I guess I
remember that sha). I will never forget screaming like a maniac as Omowunmi
emerged from a box like a contortionist at the beginning of one of her
routines. The show ran for only two seasons. The last season aired in 2009.
STAR
QUEST
This was another
reality show that was on the hit that year. I could remember one of the winners
then 'DIAMONDS'. They shone for just about two years and, kpola, they just
disappeared into the thin air! The Star is a talent show for young people who
think that they have the voice to produce sweet melodies. The winner can go
home with a prize amounting to millions of Naira. I think the last time it was
aired was in 2010.
PROJECT
FAME
ProjectFame. What a
feeling!
Who wouldn't
remember, Uncle Ben, Aunty Bibi, Joke Silva (popularly called Big Mummy).
Project Fame was a music talent TV reality show that featured 15 contestants
picked from Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, competing in a singing
competition that lasts eight weeks. By the last episode, the top six would
remain, from which the top three would be chosen (based on viewer’s votes). The
winner of each season was given a ton of money, an SUV, and a recording
contract worth millions of naira. The show ran for nine seasons. The first
winner on that show was Dare Art Alade. The show did give us some big artistes
like Chidinma (Season 3 winner), Iyanya (Season 1 winner), Niniola (Season 6
runner up) etc.
The last season aired
in 2016 and we haven’t heard anything about it since.

MALTINA
DANCE ALL
This show? You get
the FULL course of entertainment, you will learn, you laugh and enjoy yourself
by the time you see somebori's 70year old pápá doing #MoonWalk. Lol
Maltina Dance All was
a reality show where 15 dancing families (a term I honestly thought was
reserved for circus performers) competed against each other in different dance
styles for a cash prize of N5 million. The show ran for nine seasons.
It was a fun,
wholesome show that gave a lot of feel-good moments. (Family bonding and all
that.) Kemi Adetiba did a great job hosting the show for the first few seasons
before Osas Ighodaro took over. The last season aired in 2016.
WHO
WANT TO BE A MILLIONAIRE
"We will be
right back after this commercial break.. "... This commercial break has
turned to sabbatical break ó.
WWTBAM was a
television show where contestants took on a series of multiple-choice questions
for a chance to win large cash prizes. Only one contestant played at a time
(getting the chance to be on “the hot seat” by playing a “fastest finger game”
with two other hopefuls), and had no time limit to answer questions. The more
questions the contestant got right, the higher the cash they stood to win. The
maximum cash prize was N10 million.
We could remember,
"your friend... is on the HOT SEAT"...
"The next voice you're going to hear
is that of..."
After running for 13
years, the show’s main sponsor, MTN, pulled out in 2017, leading to the
production of the show being halted. Let’s just hope that if the show ever
comes back, they get the original host, Frank Edoho, back. He's the real deal!
Lol
AMSTEL
MALTA BOX OFFICE (AMBO)
I remember applying
for this reality show couple of times those days, guess luck no just shine on
me... Lol
Amstel Malta Box
Office normally abbreviated as AMBO is sponsored by the producer of Amstel
Malta, Nigerian Breweries Plc. This reality TV show aims are helping young
Nigerians that are talented in acting to develop their acting skills in order
to become super star actors. And it has produced stars and some block bluster
movies. Like Bayray McNwizu. The actress came to the limelight after winning
the third Amstel Malta Box Office (AMBO) reality show. Since her win, the
actress has featured in "Hire a Man," "Cindy Notes,"
"The Visit," "Lekki Wives 3"among others. Ivie Okujaye who acted
in" Make a Move". Oc Ukeje, who starred in, "When love
happens". And lots more! The last time it was aired was around 2014 or so.
NEXT
MOVIE STAR
Next Movie Star
initiated by Sola Fajobi has as its objective the discovery of young talented
movie stars. Popular Nigerian actors and actresses that emerged through this TV
Reality Show include Tonto Dike, Porrtia Yamhan, Annie Macauley, Tamara Eteimo
and many more.
NIGERIA
IDOL
Nigeria Idol is one
of the biggest music reality shows in Nigeria. The show is part of the global
idol franchise which is a global show. It provides a veritable opportunity for
young people talented in music to showcase their music talents. At least if I
can't remember anything, I remember Timi Dakolo. Lol
PEAK
TALENT HUNT
Peak Talent Hunt is a
13week talent show organized and sponsored by Peak a well-known maker of liquid
and powdered milk. The talent show provides a platform for young Nigerians that
are gifted in music, singing, dancing and acting to demonstrate what they know
best. Amazing price awaits the winner.
OK... Let me drop
this as a bonus, who else remember, KKB SHOW? On Silverbird tv.
KKB show coming up
right now... Kids Know Better. "Who gave you the audacity to take my meat,
my personal meat?". The boy is all grown now ooo... Lol
