THURSDAYS WITH COLLYBRIGHT
THE ROLLERCOASTER STORY OF LOVE as Recounted by Williams Mmaduabuchi Henry.
"According to my dad, he was going out with the lady in this picture who he usually called ‘the most beautiful girl in the village’ at the time.
They were in love and they even vowed not to leave each other. But every man wanted her and my dad was probably just 17 or so at the time and the big boys at the time wanted his girl. He later left to study at CKC. A few weeks later he got a letter that the girl was now married to a man he would call ‘the richest man in our town’ at the time.
He said that rich men at the time preferred very much younger wives. I think this broke him and pretty much defined the decisions he made afterwards. Coming from a very humble background and the last child, his siblings and old dad wanted him to go to school.
According to him, educated people didn't amount to much at the time and I believe the news of his love getting married hit him really hard. He dropped out of school and went into business. I believe this heartbreak made him bitter, married late, had trust issues.
Would always want to stay by himself, always assumed the worst from people, kept so many girlfriends and sometimes talked about women with this contempt that you would start to wonder. He strongly disapproved of me keeping girlfriends.
He would always
tell me about focusing on my studies and making something with my life 1st. How
I should forget women? Ironically, he couldn't forget women himself.
Looking at this picture I remember him weeping telling me this story. I was about 15-16 at the time.
He told me he saw the woman recently and she was looking really good and was driving a really nice car. She is now very much educated too, probably a civil servant.
He told me he was really happy for her and they're both still in good terms they greet whenever they bump into each other. I really wish I knew this woman. I believe my dad really loved her.
This picture was in the 1970s I believe. My dad is late now"
